Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Is Weatherford Whiskers a 501(c)(3) organization?

Answer: Yes we are a 501(c)(3) organization.  We are a rescue not a public shelter. We are 100% volunteers and most of our volunteers work full time and have families to care for. We rely on foster homes to be able to rescue more cats/kittens and we rely on donations to continue our life saving work. We receive no funding of any kind.

Question: Where do you get your cats from and do you take owner surrenders?

Answer: Our focus is on rescuing the cats/kittens from our 2 local shelters. We try to rescue as many as we have room for from their Euthanasia list. These are cats/kittens that are not able to stay at the shelter because:

  • They were brought in with no mother and are  too young to eat on their own. There is no staff at the shelter overnight to feed young kittens and they can not go all night without eating.

  • They are mothers with a litter of very young kittens. The shelter does not have the space to hold very young families until the kittens are old enough to be weaned then spay/neutered.

  • They are sick and need to be rescued so the rest of the cats/kittens in the shelter will not get sick too.

  • They are sick/injured and need more vet care than the shelter can provide.

  • They came from a hoarding situation and there just is not enough room to house them all at the shelter.

  • We do not take owner surrenders because we are limited to the available foster homes and funds we have. Our priority is saving the ones on the euthanasia lists. They will die if we do not rescue them whereas a cat with an owner/caregiver is being cared for. We do take the cats we adopt out back anytime for any reason. Sadly we have quite a few that come back after years of being adopted because of divorce, medical issues or owner is moving ( even though on their application they state that the cat will be family and will move with them)

Question: Where are you located and what are your hours?

Answer: Our center is located at 807 E. Park Ave. in Weatherford and we are open Tuesday through Friday 12 pm to 6 pm and on Saturdays 12 pm to 4pm.

Question: Can we bring our cats to your location for spay or neuter?

Answer: Sadly, we do not have a vet at our location. We pay vet bills to have our cats treated and spay/neutered just like you do. We use TCAP (Texas Collection for Animal Protection) located on South Main for low cost spay /neuter. Elite Equine is our vet and The Cats Meow is used for specialized cases.

Question: How does your adoption process work?

Answer: The first step is to visit with the Cats /Kittens at our adoption center.
The second step is to fill out an adoption application at Weatherfordwhiskers.org. On that application you will list the name(s)of the cat(s)you would like to adopt.  You will then receive a response to your application within 48 BUSINESS hours of the receipt of your application.  If approved, we will set up an appointment for a volunteer to meet with you to complete the adoption contract. All cats must leave our facility in a carrier. You are welcome to bring one. If you do not have one, we can provide a cardboard carrier for a fee of $15.

Question:  What is the adoption fee?

Answer: The adoption fee is $100 included in that fee the cat has been spayed/neutered, micro chipped, current on all vaccines, dewormed and has tested negative for AIDS and leukemia.

Question: What is TNR ?

Answer: TNR stands for Trap, Neuter, Return.  This program does not keep your cat or help rehome the cat. The cat is to be RETURNED to its trapping location. Weatherford Whiskers does not have volunteer power to trap your cats, but we will loan you traps and walk you through the trapping process.  The community/feral cat will receive an ear tip to show they have been TNR'ed.

There are several FREE TNR programs.  For Parker County residents the Weatherford Parker County Shelter holds their clinics on Wednesday and Fridays for the first 12 cats in traps in line. They do limit it to 2 per household. On the last Wednesday of every month the shelter offers TNRs to100 cats with no limit to the number of cats in live traps you can bring. For everyone outside of Parker County the FREE program is offered by TCAP (Texas Coalition for Animal Protection). They hold their clinic every Thursday and Friday in Weatherford.  TCAP will TNR 12 cats FREE in live traps per day with a limit of 4 per household per day.  Both programs fill up far so plan on be there early to get a spot.

Question: Where can I borrow a live trap?

Answer: We loan out traps anytime during business hours. They are loaned out for a period of two weeks, and you can borrow a maximum of 4 traps per household at a time. There is no charge to borrow the traps, but we do require a credit card on file that will be charged if the traps are not returned in on time or are returned damaged.

Question: How can I become a volunteer or foster?

Answer: We have a volunteer application and foster application here on our website weatherfordwhiskers.org. We are always in need of foster homes as well as cleaners for our adoption center. Help is also needed with the spay/neuter program run by the Weatherford Shelter.   We would love to have you join our great team.
